The Problem

Lambright is great.
Planning around it isn't.

Lambright Sports & Wellness Center is one of the best resources on campus — free for every enrolled student, packed with courts, pools, a climbing wall, and more. But coordinating how to actually use it? That's a mess of emails, group chats, and showing up and hoping for the best.

This is a communication problem, not a facilities problem. The space exists. The students want to use it. What's missing is the system that connects them.

Teams trying to reserve the gym face back-and-forth email chains with staff. Students looking for a pickup game post in group chats and hope someone sees it. There's no central place to see what's open, what's busy, or who else is going.

📧
Email back-and-forth to reserve space
Teams and orgs navigate unstructured emails with rec staff to book courts, with no visibility into what's already taken.
🤷
No way to know if the gym is packed
Students make the walk to Lambright only to find the weight room full or their court taken. No live info, no planning tools.
📱
Pickup games die in group chats
Finding workout partners or filling a basketball roster relies entirely on who happens to see a text — no organized way to match up.
🪪
Physical ID card to enter every time
Every visit starts with handing your card to an attendant to swipe. It's slow, old-fashioned, and creates a bottleneck at the door — especially during peak hours.
The Story — Live Skit

Meet Alex & Jordan

Watch how two Louisiana Tech students go from frustrated to fully coordinated — using Dawg Park at Lambright. Click through each moment.

1
Alex — the initiator
"Hey, want to go shoot some pool at Lambright tonight? I think they have billiards down there... or maybe the rec room? I don't even know where it is."
🎭 Alex pulls out his phone, clearly lost. No app, no plan, just vibes. This is the problem.
2
Jordan — the skeptic
"I have no idea. Last time I went I walked around for 10 minutes. And I wanted to use the basketball court last week — had to email somebody and never heard back."
🎭 Jordan shrugs. Classic Lambright problem — great facility, zero coordination. Audience laughs in recognition.
3
Alex — discovers Dawg Park
"Wait — you heard about this? There's an app now. Dawg Park at Lambright. Let me check." [opens app] "Okay — map's right here. Billiards is on the first floor near equipment checkout."
🎭 Alex opens the app on screen — the map tab is live. Points to the floor plan. Audience can see it on the projected presentation.
4
Jordan — checks the busy tracker
"Okay but is it even going to be slammed at 6? The weight room is always packed after class."
🎭 Jordan takes the phone — navigates to Home screen, shows the live busy tracker. Weight room: 82% 🔴. Recreation area: 20% 🟢. "We're good."
5
Alex — makes a reservation
"Let me just go ahead and lock us in. Don't want to show up and it's taken." [taps Reserve] "Done. Billiards table, 6 to 7, confirmed."
🎭 Alex taps through the Reserve tab — picks the date, hits a slot, the confirmation sheet pops up. Two taps. Reserved. No email needed.
6
Jordan — finds the match board
"Oh — there's a match board too? Marcus posted he needs two more for basketball at 5. That's before we go play pool. You in?"
🎭 Jordan shows the Match tab — Marcus's listing is right there. Jordan hits "Request to join." Request sent. All four features hit in under 60 seconds.
7
Alex — walks up to the front desk
"Oh — and when we get there, I don't even need my ID card anymore." [taps My ID tab] "Just hold this up to the scanner. Done."
🎭 Alex opens the QR tab — shows the rotating code. Holds it to an imaginary scanner. "Beeep." Green light. No card, no fumbling, no line.
8
Both — the punchline
"Basketball at 5, pool at 6, walked straight in, knew exactly where to go. That's what $5,000 builds — something students actually use, every single day."
🎭 Both turn to the audience. Clean handoff to the presentation. Transition to the budget slide.

Why QR check-in?
Your Dawg Park QR replaces the physical card swipe at the Lambright front desk. The scanner reads your student ID, verifies your enrollment, and confirms any reservations you have — all in one scan. No card required. No line.
How QR Check-In Works

One scan. You're in.

Currently every student hands their physical ID to an attendant who swipes it. Dawg Park replaces that with a secure, rotating QR code — the same system used by Planet Fitness, university gyms nationwide, and most modern rec centers.

1
Open the app
Tap "My ID" — your personal QR appears instantly, pre-loaded with your student info.
2
Hold it up
Hold your screen toward the scanner at the Lambright entrance — same as scanning a boarding pass.
3
Scanner confirms
The scanner verifies enrollment, checks reservations, and logs your visit — all in under a second.
4
Walk straight in
Green light. No card, no wait, no fumbling. Head straight to your court or session.
Why this matters beyond convenience
The QR code connects identity → reservation → entry in one system. If a team reserved Court A at 5pm, the scanner can immediately confirm that when they check in — no separate verification needed. It also means the facility always has an accurate digital log of who's inside, which improves both safety and traffic data for the busy indicator.
Budget & Risks

$5,000 goes a long way
when you build it yourself.

Estimated Spend

Web hosting & domain (2 yrs)~$150
Design assets & icons~$100
Database / backend service~$300
Student outreach & launch~$300
Contingency~$500
Total estimated~$1,350
Key Risks
Student adoption
The app is only valuable if students use it. Launch strategy and visibility are critical — QR codes, orgs, and tabling at Lambright.
School buy-in
Long-term success requires rec staff to use the admin side. Keeping that view dead-simple is essential.
Maintenance after launch
Handoff to Louisiana Tech IT or Recreation Department ensures the platform lives on beyond this class.
$3,650
Remaining from $5,000 budget
Because the platform is student-built, over 70% of the budget stays unspent — available for marketing, scaling, or handoff to the university. This is a $5K idea that could realistically sustain itself for years on a few hundred dollars annually.
Annual running cost after launch
~$200/yr
